[ GAME INFO/FAQ ]

[ Game Basics ]
[ Introduction ]

➤Welcome to Tamer Union!

Tamer Union is a panfandom role-playing musebox based on the Digimon franchise. It takes inspiration from but is directly tied to no existing Digimon continuity but its own. Your character is brought into the Digital World and given a Digimon partner to help combat the mysterious forces that threaten not just the Digital World, but also all worlds.

➤Do I have to be knowledgeable about the Digimon franchise to play here?

While some familiarity helps, it is not required to know a terrible lot about the Digimon franchise to play here! We aim to inform players as much as possible about our world and the creatures that live in it so that they can app into this game comfortably without having to be pre-existing fans of the Digimon franchise.

➤When can I app to this game/test drive/reserve?

A test drive is posted to the meme community every two months. Character claims can be put in at any time, even without a roleplay sample. There are no reserves for this game.

➤ What kinds of characters can be applied for to this game?

All characters generally are appable to this game, no matter their age or what material they come from. Characters from animation, video games, live action, and whatever else can all be applied for here, so long as they would have a reason to say “yes” to the question when the Digital Gate first appears. However, we ask that the canon point for your character must have been published in some form for at least 30 days before applying.

We also allow original characters as well. This includes OCs from original canons, malleable protagonists from role-playing games, and characters from tabletop RPGs (whether they be independent or based on another property). Beyond these, we do not accept OCs from specific canons.

➤ You said this takes place in the "Digital World." My character comes from a world without digital technology Can they be applied for to this game?

Yes they can. Any information that exists can be broken down into data, and all data flows into the Digital World whether digital devices exist or not.

➤ Can we app canon Digimon characters?

Yes! People can app characters from any of the myriad Digimon series, video games, manga, or other materials to this game. This does, however, come with some caveats, the chief one being that in coming here, canonical Digimon characters now have to adhere to the new rules of the setting.

In addition to their partners now fitting how said Digimon are portrayed in the Handbook, their evolution progress is effectively reset. Furthermore, cases such as Matrix Evolution and Spirit Evolution can no longer occur, so Tamers characters would no longer fuse with their partners and characters from Frontier would receive Digimon partner versions of their Legendary Spirits. Card Slash from Tamers and Digi-Soul from Savers is fine, though, and would fit under abilities and not be used to evolve their partners.

In the case of characters from Digimon Universe: Applimonsters, Buddy Appmon would now evolve and function like Digimon. Players of said characters would be trusted to portray their partners accurately, as there will not be Appmon entries in the Handbook.

➤ Can we app characters from the same canon?

You may claim characters from the same canon, yes! This is a musebox, so we are less concerned with same player interactions. However, we ask that players don't be excessive about it.

➤ Can there be multiple versions of a character in the game?

Yes, different versions of characters are allowed. An example of this, to draw from Digimon itself, would be the versions of Yagami Taichi from Adventure, V-Tamer 01, and the Taichi from the recent Adventure: reboot. However, no one player would be allowed to play multiple versions of the same person; in short, no one could play two Taichis, they'd have to be played by separate players.

Additionally, you must prove that the two versions of said characters are different enough. For instance, you could not apply for Taichi from the manhua version of Adventure if the other is already in the game, and the same would go for any other series that received a largely faithful adaptation. On the other hand, if you wanted to, say, apply for someone whose manga/anime adaptation significantly diverged, it'd be fine to have both versions in the game. It all depends on what degree they are different.
[ Character Arrival ]

➤ What is the Digital World and where can it be located?

The Digital World exists inside a cyberspace formed from the flow of data from all known universes. It is formed entirely from this data, which forms the basis for space, time, and matter all within its reality. In short, it is a digital dimension. The primary inhabitants of this dimension are called Digimon.

➤ How did my character get to the Digital World?

Your circumstances of your character's arrival are explained on the Premise page.

➤ How will everyone understand each other?

The Digital World has its ways, everyone is now in a digital environment and it automatically translates what everyone is saying regardless of what language they speak.

➤ How does my character receive their Digimon partner?

Your character's partner will find them! They can either be an existing Digimon who has been around a while, or a newborn Digimon who exists purely for your character's sake. They may even be there when you’re introduced to the Digital World for the first time. Either way, they'll instinctively know that your character is their partner, and how you find each other is up to you!

➤ Does my character get a Digivice, like in the anime?

The “Digivice” for this setting is a program that installs itself on whatever digital technology your character happens to be carrying. Those that don’t have one will be given a smart phone-like device with the program on it. Said program displays their partner’s current health, current evolutionary stage, allows one to access TamerNet (the network community for this game), contains a digital version of the Digimon Handbook, and has a number of basic applications for daily life installed as well. And they’re all ad-free!

➤ Where will my character live?

A home for your character and their partner will be provided in Access City, the main location hub for the game. It’s your basic one bedroom, one bath style affair, so the two of you better learn to share! The outer appearance of your home can be customized using an app in your Digivice, and can be expanded using rewards for Bonus AC (but more on that later).

➤ What happens to nonhuman characters when they enter the Digital World?

Non-humans stay non-human in the Digital World. After all, in a world filled with monsters of all shapes and sizes, it doesn’t make much sense to change people into something else.

➤ Wait, what happens if I app a nonhuman character who’s larger than a human?

The Digital World is full of all kinds of creatures, great and small, so your character would stay the same size. The house they are assigned would be appropriately sized as well, or be bigger on the inside (something something data compression). It’s up to you and whatever you prefer! Most establishments will be built for a creature of their size as well.

➤ What about money?

Your character arrives in the Digital World completely broke. However, you can have them earn money ICly by undertaking quests, getting a job, or by running a business (though you need a permit for that). There is no hard-and-fast mechanic for earning money, we just ask that you be reasonable in how much they earn. The currency of the Digital World is called BITS and has a value that’s 1:1 analogous to Japanese yen.

➤ Is there power nerfing in this game?

It’s less power nerfing and more power scaling. Your character gets to keep all their abilities from home, but they’re only as strong as their Digimon partner’s current evolution level. As a result, the mightiest dragon’s fireball may only be as strong as an Agumon’s Baby Flame attack.

However, there’s another side to all this. Just as your powers are weakened depending on your Digimon, they’ll get stronger as your Digimon evolves. So by the time your partner reaches the Ultimate level, your character will be able to fight alongside them. However, this only goes for characters with powers, and those that lack them will have to find other means. But don’t worry, there are ways to even the playing field thanks to Bonus AC.

➤ Can we bring companion-type characters to this game along with their partners, like Pokemon or magical girl fairies?

In some cases yes, in some cases no. If it's the sort of companion that would make a Digimon partner redundant, like a Pokemon partner, then the answer is no. However, if the companion character is necessary for your character to access their abilities, as is the case with some magical girl fairies, then they would be allowed in the game.

➤ My character's Digimon is more suited to life in the water. How do they get around?

There is a program in your character's Digivice app that can apply the "float" ability to any aquatic Digimon. This allows them to float through the air as easily they would swim through water. However, they cannot fly very high or away from the ground/floor, and will be pulled downward if knocked off a high location.

➤ How does the network work?

The network ([community profile] tamernet) effectively functions like a journal community or message board. New entries are added as separate posts, and can be audio, video, or text. All posts to the network are saved, and can be found after they are made, so they can be accessed long term. When someone effectively joins "tamernet", they are added as a potential contact to all who are already on it. People are allowed to enter their own monikers or "usernames" when they register their Digivice, so one is free to use aliases.

[ Game Mechanics ]

➤ What is AC like?

There is no AC in this game.

➤ Is there Bonus AC/activity rewards?

Our policy for activity rewards is still being determined.

➤ What can I spend Bonus AC on?

This will be laid out on the Items/Rewards Page once we determine its parameters.

➤ How do I get my character's Digimon to evolve?

The first three evolution stages, Baby, Baby II, and Child, are all automatically unlocked from the moment you get into the game. As a result, your partner can reach these forms as fast as you want to; you can even have it so that they've done so already.

The conditions for further evolutionary stages are laid out here.

Please note that when you app into the game, all you need know are your partner's first three Levels' forms. You will have time to choose your partner's evolutionary stages as you purchase them, you need not establish them in advance.

ICly, conditions for evolution are depicted as a meter on your character's Digivice, accompanied by a silhouette of your partner’s evolved form. Once an evolution is earned, said silhouette and the meter will be filled in, and your character’s partner can freely evolve to each stage.

➤ What are Monthly Quests?

Monthly quests are prompts that are created every two months that will allow your character to earn money and other items ICly. Each Monthly Quest can be undertaken by all characters in the game, so no one can claim a quest for themselves.

➤ What happens when my character goes on hiatus?

You have two choices here. One is that the character is on autopilot, with you having to account for what they would have seen/learned/done in your absence. The other option is having your character enter a sort of "data hibernation" where their form is frozen until your hiatus ends. If you want to be hilarious with it, you can even have them have become frozen in the middle of doing something else. The same could be true of their Digimon, for both options.

➤ What happens when a character is dropped from the game?

When a character is dropped, they are then ejected from the Digital World, returning to their home world. The reason for this is unknown ICly, and not understood at all by Tamer Union. The character may be reapplied for, provided no one apps them in the interim. What happens to their partner is up to player discretion; they could either be left behind, or go with their partner to their world.

➤ How do canon updates work?

When a canon update occurs, the character is ejected from the Digital World as with a character drop, but without their partner. They will then be gone from the game for both an IC and OOC week. Upon their return, they will have experienced the whole of their canon update.

➤ How does character death work?

If a player character dies in-game, they are dead. There is no mechanism for bringing them back. Once this happens they are considered dropped from the game.

If a Digimon partner dies, they will be reborn as a DigiEgg, upon which case it will take an IC week for them to hatch again. Though they will retain their memories, they will be unable to spontaneously evolve for an IC month afterwards, and have to grow back to their Child stage through their Baby stages in that time.

Deaths are not acceptable as canon points, as characters must be alive to accept entry into the Digital World. Taking them from moments before said death is fine, however, and they would be healed by the process of coming into the Digital World.
[ The Digimon Handbook ]

➤ What is the Digimon Handbook?

The Digimon Handbook is our resource for information on individual Digimon species and how they're portrayed in our game, as well as certain in-universe details, such as what Digimon are as well as aspects of the Digital World. It is located at [community profile] digimonhandbook.

➤ What’s up with the names of things? Why aren’t you using terms like “Champion” or names like “Biyomon”?

We’re going to be using the original Japanese names for evolutionary stages and Digimon names/attacks. This is largely because the dub version is very inconsistent as far as terminology goes. In general, we will strive for a balance between what is accurate and what is recognizable, while avoiding some painful official romanizations ("Orgemon", "Fantomon", etc.)

However, there is one exception. For reasons of cultural sensitivity, we have opted to use the outdated dub name of Rockmon rather than the original Golemon.

➤ But the dub names are from my childhood!

We’re sympathetic to people who have grown up with the dub, but this is for consistency’s sake. It’s not just inconsistent with things like the names of attacks; some Digimon have multiple dub names, in fact! This is so we can keep everything straight.

➤ Why make your own Handbook?

Once again, this goes back to consistency. Each piece of Digimon media portrays the ins-and-outs of the Digital World differently, so we elected to make our own Handbook with our own profiles so we could create a world that portrayed everything a single, particular way.

➤ Isn't that a lot of work?

It is, a fair bit. In fact, by the time of this writing, the Handbook isn’t finished yet! It’ll be periodically updated, though, and rest assured, you will all get information on each relevant Digimon species when you app and when you might encounter them in events.

➤ Why do some of these details differ from the Digimon Reference Book or anime?

There’s several reasons for that. No piece of Digimon media portrays things the same way twice, so we decided on what fit best for our game. Sometimes attacks may differ from one show to the next, so we have to choose one for our game. Other times, we may have to put Digimon at a different evolutionary level to properly convey their uniqueness or level of power. At other times, we may invent a Digimon to fill a certain niche as well. It should be noted that whatever appears in the Handbook is particular to our game, and should not be considered official information for the Digimon franchise.

➤ Do I need to read the entire Handbook before I app into the game?

By no means do you have to read the entire Handbook before you join the game. Information on your character’s Digimon partner and their evolved stages will be provided to you when you’re accepted into the game. You can even have the mods pick a Digimon and evolution line for you! Details on asking them to do so are in the app. So rest assured, you don’t even have to glance at a single profile prior to applying if you don’t want to.

➤ What about all the pages on the world and setting?

Now those would be a good idea to at least glance through before you commit to apping into the game.

➤ How do Digimon names work?

All Digimon names end in "-mon", distinguishing them from other lifeforms and digital entities.

There are cases of distinct Digimon species sharing the same name - for example, the "basic" Vaccine-attribute Agumon and the black-scaled Virus-attribute Agumon both identify themselves as Agumon and are known as Agumon to other Digimon. The name “Agumon (Black)” is simply used to differentiate them in the Handbook, and would be referred to as “a black Agumon” or just “Agumon” in everyday speech. Other subspecies that have distinct names, like YukiAgumon, would be referred to by their full species name, however.

In short: everything attached to the "-mon" is the name proper, and anything else is optional.

➤ What do you mean by “subspecies” and “type-species”?

Subspecies are Digimon that have diverged from another Digimon species to a new, distinct species. For instance, Agumon has the subspecies Agumon (Black), Agumon (Variant), BushiAgumon, ProfessorAgumon, Profauxssor Agumon, and YukiAgumon. The “type-species” would then be Agumon itself.

A group of Digimon that all share a name or heritage would be referred to by their type-species; for instance, all of the Agumon are known as “Agumon-species”, all the Greymon would be “Greymon-species”, and so on.

➤ Why are there no Appmon in the Handbook?

As much as we love Digimon Universe: Applimonsters here, Appmon are a separate species from Digimon and behave entirely differently. As such, aside from allowing characters from the series into the game with their Buddy Appmon, Appmon will not be part of the game at the time of this writing. As stated above, anyone who chooses to apply for a character from Applimonsters would be trusted to portray their Buddies accurately.

➤ Why are some Digimon missing from the Handbook?

Those Digimon not in the Handbook may be missing for several reasons, but in all cases, they are not obtainable as partners/evolutions in this game. Reasons for why include being too powerful or being NPC only at this time (ex. Omegamon, Eyesmon), lacking enough material or being too minor to be included (ex. Cardmon, Blikmon), or for cultural sensitivity reasons (ex. Dinohumon, Allomon, Ponchomon, Sepikmon, etc.).

➤ Do I have to follow the handbook completely when conceiving a personality for my partner??

Heavens no. The details about Digimon personality and general behavior in the Handbook are only guidelines, something to give beginners something to work off from. If you want to deviate from the Handbook in this area, and make your partner different from the rest of their species, by all means!
